I’m new to handling my pool and am wondering how I can keep the “free chlorine” high enough in my pool. I can maintain the balance of the other chemicals fine. My system has a place for tablets and a dial that is supposed to let me control the rate with which the tablets are disolved. I’ve been using shock thus far. Any pointers? Thanks.
No worries Lamar – good question.
The first place I’d look into is testing your conditioner levels (also known as cyaneric acid). This is what protects the chlorine from the sun and it’s very important – primarily during swim season). I would check this and get it back dialed in to reasonable levels. Without it, you’ll always be adding more chlorine to your water and spending lots of dough when it’s not necessary!
We have a Sylvan in ground pool that has 2 rows of tile around the top edge which butts up against a cap tht extends over the edge about an inch or so. It is beginning to crack in the seam where they meet and in a few places the gap is pretty pronouced. It is possible to caulk around this joint to keep water from seeping in behind the sidewall.
Does too much liquid shock and or powder shock hurt a vinyl liner???
Hi Rick,
Too much of anything is not good for a pool surface or the water itself. The mentality is “less is better” for everyone and everything. That being said, it would take A LOT to harm a liner – I’d be more worried about the quality of the water and “what” you’re swimming in.
All the best,
Terry,
I enjoy reading your blog and emails. You have provided me and my family with a wealth of knowledge about our pool…just wanted to say thanks!
Matt
Thank you for your kind words and the smile Matt!
